Two sisters reunite in the village of their youth and expose generational trauma long covered-up by family matriarchs.

The Characters

Ni Abeokuta

The two main characters and the trauma they experienced during their teenage years are based on actual events happening to women in both the United States and Nigeria.

Dunnie was a brilliant and self-aware girl, qualities that contributed to her success as an accomplished doctor and lawyer in adulthood. She resides in the United States with her doting husband and teenage daughter. Although having a seemingly picture-perfect life, she struggles with intimately connecting with her husband and is overbearing with her daughter.

This is rooted in direct trauma in her early teenage years and experiencing secondary trauma from how her family treated Yewande. As one of the protagonists of this story, Dunnie defends and supports her subdued sister, Yewande.

Kind, passive, and gullible, Yewande has never truly been loved except for the love from her sister. Her strong suit was possessing culinary and dancing talents, and she struggled in school with academics. Yewande was viewed as a disappointment at best to her family and treated like a shameful secret. Unfortunately, her early experience of sexual abuse and mistreatment from her family has influenced her to take a different life path than Dunnie. Yewande spends her time drinking and partying to distract from her sadness. Also a protagonist in the story, Yewande is finally presented with an opportunity to courageously speak out against her former abusers.

The Synopsis

.png

Two sisters reunite in a Nigerian village from their childhood and expose intergenerational trauma that was long concealed by their family's female leaders. Dunnie is consumed with guilt for leaving Yewande behind, while Yewande is reminded of the deep-rooted trauma that has been systematically buried by their family's matriarchs. As they converse, they come to realize that they are both struggling in their own ways — Dunnie with the pressure to achieve the American dream and Yewande with the unrelenting challenges of surviving in a harsh environment. In that moment, they find solace in each other's presence and make a vow to support each other in healing from the past and facing the future together.
